Like a silent score, the trees compose a landscape of slow-moving forces, invisible currents, and patient rustlings—a diffuse, calm yet persistent energy that runs through the entire event. Bringing together works by around fifty artists, including some ten new works created especially for the occasion, the exhibition, which will take place from June to September 2026, explores the ambivalences of an agricultural world concerned with water, an element that has played an important role in Melle’s local history. The Biennial also resonates with a culture of living together, unconditional hospitality, resistance, and a situated, embodied, and open ecological thinking—values that characterize the town today. The works of the participating artists, from a wide range of geographical and cultural backgrounds, will enter into dialogue with this specific context, making their individual experiences the starting point for a shared reflection. Like a fable waiting patiently for an ear to come and listen to it, the exhibition approaches Melle as an “author-town.” The works on display will reveal the many narratives carried by the spaces they inhabit: from the Hôtel de Ménoc, a former courthouse, to the Romanesque churches and Protestant temple; from the arboretum to the former washhouses; and from the gardens to the public squares. It is this state of suspension that the event seeks to make perceptible, through places, but also through the involvement of local residents in the creation of certain works. Bruissements patients (Patient Rustlings) asserts the particular strength and vitality of art: not as an immediate force, but as an ability to reconfigure the ways in which we see, inhabit, and imagine the world. In the château’s forest, Jan Kopp has installed three bronze sculptures reproducing branches found on site. Hidden at crossroads chosen by children as ideal places for building dens, these forms initially blend into their surroundings. The eye gradually discovers subtle details: unexpected assemblages, ornamental elements, or almost imperceptible signs that gently shift our perception. Through this trompe-l’œil effect, Jan Kopp introduces a slight sense of disquiet into the experience of the landscape and invites us to observe our surroundings differently. Without imposing any spectacular gesture, Sylva reveals uses that are already present on the site—the children’s dens, the forest paths, the spontaneous forms of play and exploration—while also activating a deeper memory of the place. The work thus resonates with the “baker trees,” sculpted over time through the repeated pruning of their branches, as well as with the pastoral imagination of Honoré d’Urfé’s L’Astrée, whose landscapes of Forez still bear its traces. As is often the case in Jan Kopp’s work, sculpture becomes the starting point for a collective experience. Families, local residents, and visitors are invited to build ephemeral dens around the artworks using dead branches collected on site. With Sylva, Jan Kopp offers a poetic, site-specific, and participatory work that transforms the forest into a space for attention, movement, and storytelling. The resources for a sculpture are those found on site, and involve an encounter with the people living near the exhibition site. This project proposes a trellis architecture, built from materials collected from the people of Amiens. These include used rod-shaped objects such ascurtain poles, rulers, fishing rods, oars, tool handles, arrows, bicycle pumps, car antennas, bamboo and various utensils. Linked together according to size and weight, these elements form a rhizomic whole, a structure of stakes that support and solidify each other. Designed to accommodate the growth of climbing vegetables - beans, peas, squash, chayotes or cucumbers - this construction can also be crossed by visitors. Thanks to a call for contributions, the construction elements werecollected in the Hortillonnages area, but also in more distant neighborhoods: from private homes, public institutions, garages, cellars or attics, where these objects had sometimes been slumbering for years. They represent places as much as their inhabitants, creating a concentrated geography composed of individual elements from all directions. Each object carries with it a story, whether trivial or serious, forgotten or known to all. The resulting ensemble reflects the diversity and complexity of a community, at once harmonious and contradictory. The device functions as a horticultural tool. The construction becomes a suspended, vertical vegetable garden, allowing the development of climbing plants reaching three to four meters in height. Based on this structure, this vertical vegetable garden unifies and energizes the contrasting ensemble of collected objects. The notion of tuteur is the poetic essence. A harvest of ripe vegetables will give rise to events or distributions, bringing the loop initiated by the “harvest” of objects full circle.” Jan Kopp, june 2025 This project is part of a series of sculptures entitled “Les grandsensembles”, in which the artist experiments with different forms of collective assembly. This type of construction has already been presented in various venues, including La Criée - center d'art contemporain in Renne (2014), La Comédie de Caen (2023), as well as the Villa du Parc - center d'art contemporain in Annemasse and the Kunstverein Ebersberg in Germany in 2025. With each new version, the result remains unpredictable and impossible to design in advance, as the final shape depends on the elements collected along the way.
